BONAIRE

Bonaire:
A diver’s paradise

Bonaire is renowned for its nature and world-class coral reefs and diverse marine life. Snorkel or scuba dive in the crystal-clear waters, or explore the island’s rugged landscapes and salt flats.

Architecture

Bonaire’s architecture offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s history, reflecting a blend of Dutch colonial influences and practical adaptations to the Caribbean climate.

Historical Influences:

Much of Bonaire’s historical architecture showcases Dutch colonial styles. You’ll find structures that incorporate elements of neoclassical design.

Early homes, “Cas di Bara”, were made of local materials, but these have mostly disappeared. Stone homes “Cas di Piedra” and later larger stone homes “Cas di hadrei” are what are seen from the late 19th century onward.

Key Features:

Many older buildings feature red tile roofs, and white brick bands on the hips and ridges of those roofs.
“Pirons,” wooden vertical posts that protrude above the roof, are also a characteristic feature.
Structures were often designed to maximize airflow, taking advantage of the trade winds for natural cooling.
Fort Oranje is a key architectural building, and is the oldest building on Bonaire.

Notable Structures:

Fort Oranje: A historic fort that stands as a testament to the island’s colonial past.
The Governor’s House: A well-preserved example of 19th-century architecture.
Mangazina di Rei: A very old stone store house.
Plasa Machi Mimi: A building showing roman style architecture.

Bonaire’s architectural heritage is a valuable part of its cultural identity, and efforts are ongoing to preserve these historic structures.
